Summer Recommendations

We have compiled a few recommendations that let you make the most of your Summer studying in Vancouver and Kelowna. Summer 2022 is just around the corner and we want you to take advantage of it. Enhance your Canadian experience by adding these activities to your to-do list this summer.

Go to a Summer Market

Our first recommendation is to grab your friends and go to a summer market. If you are in the Lower Mainland the most famous one you can go to is the Richmond Night Market. This night market always attracts a crowd being it’s just a few minutes walk from the nearest Skytrain station. Heavily influenced by Asian themes a night spent here is a definite must-try. Make sure you bring cash to be able to enjoy the festivities the market has to offer. There are performances, games, pop-up shops, and plenty of food stalls. Let the good times roll as the scent of tasty eats fills the air.

If you are in Kelowna, we recommend waking up early one Saturday morning this summer and visiting the Kelowna Farmers’ & Crafters’ Market. This market is only open from 8am to 1pm. A visit here will allow you to immerse yourself with the locals. Many stalls will be selling cuisines from other nations. While other stalls will be selling goods from local farmers and artists.

Go Hiking

Our next recommendation seems like a no-brainer and that is to go on a hike! BC (British Columbia) is filled with many beautiful trails that let you admire amazing views and breathe in nature’s fresh air. The best part is both VanWest Vancouver and Kelowna are SUPER close to many hiking trails. Grab your friends and go for a walk!

If you are studying at VanWest College Vancouver we highly suggest hiking up Lynn Canyon. Lynn Canyon has multiple trails that let you be one with nature while also breaking a little sweat! This hike is fun for the whole family. The best part is, there is a river along this trail that you can go swimming in at the end.

If you are a student in Kelowna then we suggest you take on the Apex Trail at Knox Mountain Park. Grab your friends and hike this trail on one sunny weekend. At the top, you will witness amazing views of the city and Lake Okanagan. For those who went to document their stay in Canada, this hike is truly “IG worthy”.

Go on a Road Trip

Aside from the recommendations above we suggest going on a road trip! Now we know not all of our students may have a license to drive in Canada, what we mean is to go out and explore the neighboring areas of Vancouver and Kelowna.

VanWest College Kelowna students can enhance their overall Canadian experience by visiting the towns nearby. Visit the family-friendly wineries and other sights in Peachland, Summerland, Penticton, and many more. If you are feeling more adventurous, at the top of our recommendations is joining a Rocky Mountains Tour. Head eastward and see the Canadian Rockies.

VanWest College Vancouver students we suggest you head westward to BC’s capital, Victoria. Victoria is on Vancouver Island away from Vancouver and the rest of the Lower Mainland. This day trip can be easily planned via transit or renting a car. Take in the amazing sights and sounds of the ferry ride and the welcoming atmosphere of Victoria. From the Legislature to Fisherman’s Wharf to Butchart Gardens this road trip is really family-friendly.

Go Patio-Hopping

our last suggestion of the summer recommendations is to go patio-hopping! Canadian summers are a combination of cool breezes and warm sunny days. In a nutshell, it’s perfect going out weather.

Vancouver is a melting pot of culture and diversity. This means there is a huge (and we mean huge) variety of amazing restaurants that have patio-dining and summer menus. If it is manageable we recommend trying one new location each week.

If you are studying at Kelowna then you are in for a treat this summer! #meetmeonbernard will take place this summer from July 1 to September 6. Bernard Avenue in Downtown Kelowna is being transformed into a pedestrian strip from St. Paul Street to Okanagan Lake, with patios, performances, activities, art installations, and other attractions.

We hope you enjoyed our summer recommendations. A big part of studying abroad is immersing yourself within the local community. Make your studying in Canada experience not only fruitful but enjoyable with memories that will last a lifetime. Is it your turn to study in Canada?
