Arriving at the Restaurant

If you have booked a table:
“Hello, I have booked a table for ____ people.” : number of people
If you have not booked a table:
“Hello, do you have a table free?”
“Do you have a table for ____ ?” : number of people

Asking About the Menu

“What is ____ exactly?” : if you are not sure of something on the menu
“Is this served with salad?” : does the food come with salad?
“Does this have any nuts in it?” : does the dish contain nuts?
“What do you recommend?”

Ordering

A waiter says:
“Are you ready to order?”
“Can I take your order?”
“Anything to drink?”
You say:
“We are not ready yet. Could you give us a few more minutes?”
“I will have ____.”
“We would like to order ____.”
“Could I have ____?”
“I would like to have a glass of water, please.”

Dealing with Problems

“Excuse me, I did not order this.”
“Could I have another spoon, please?”
“Could you heat this up a bit more, please?”
“I am sorry, but this dish is cold.”

Paying for Your Meal

“Could I have the bill, please?”
“Can I have the machine?” : when you are paying by credit card
“Can I pay by credit card?”
If you think your bill is wrong:
“Could you check the bill for me, please? It does not seem right.”
“I think there is a mistake with the bill.”
* “bill” in British English / “check” in American English

* In Canada, it is customary to leave a tip of around 10-15% of the bill, for good service and food.
