Our General English Program
Our General English program is based on an integrated skill curriculum. Core classes teach students specific strategies to improve their English while electives reinforce their core language skills. VanWest College offers eight general English benchmark levels. These levels accommodate a student’s progression from a beginner learner with little English skill to advanced language proficiency.

Level 1: Beginner
Starting at level 1 will provide the student a basic foundation in the English language. They build an understanding of basic grammar, vocabulary, and the functions of the English language. The lessons provide a foundation in the structure of all four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Level 2: High Beginner
At level 2 there will be an in-depth treatment on grammar. A systematic vocabulary syllabus that includes dictionary training and works on systems such as collocations. Pronunciation work and everyday English are presented allowing the students to practice functional language and social situations.

Level 3: Pre-Intermediate
Level 3 develops the 4-skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, in an integrated manner. The topics, which lead to lively communication in the class, are current and of high interest to adult learners. The course will provide a foundation that will gradually build a students’ understanding of basic grammar, vocabulary, and so much more.

Level 4: Intermediate 1
At level 4 a student is taught using communicative interaction. Students will practice and improve their communication skills throughout their time in class. Students will improve in the four language skills in English, grammar, and vocabulary-building.

Level 5: Intermediate 2
Level 5 emphasizes the integration of reading, listening, speaking, vocabulary, and grammar-building skills. It will provide a foundation in the intermediate structure of the English language. Fifth level students will gradually build their understanding of basic grammar, vocabulary, and functions of English.

Level 6: High Intermediate
Level 6 provides a higher intermediate base of academic English. The subject matter in this level is carefully selected that students learn new concepts and encounter new perspectives. Sixth-level students complete exercises that improve their critical thinking skills.

Level 7: Pre-Advanced
Seventh-level students are provided a foundation in advanced structures of the English language. They are to gradually build an advanced understanding of basic grammar, vocabulary, and the functions of English.

Level 8: Advanced
The eighth level is designed to help develop a students’ academic language and studying skills. This is will provide our students the necessary skills to perform successfully within a post-secondary setting. Components include listening and note-taking; seminar presentation and discussion; academic reading; university-level vocabulary; and essay writing.
