Featured Course: IELTS 7.5
VanWest College offers a variety of courses to help students achieve their goals, and this week’s featured course, IELTS 7.5, is among the most recent. In order to get to know more about this course, we’ve asked the instructor to answer some general questions. To find out about this amazing course, read below!
What do you hope students will get from the course?
Students will be able to challenge themselves. They will improve their current, or potential, IELTS scores. They can expect to achieve between 6 to 7.5, or even further. Advanced IELTS training would certainly prepare students to succeed in EAP 300 or other academic courses at VanWest or outside of VanWest. The class uses Oxford IELTS Masterclass, a proven textbook that helps students to practice successful techniques and skills that IELTS assessors are looking for. Although most classes say that students can improve one band level in 12 weeks, students in this course can choose to prepare at their own speed using homework exercises and assignments.
Why is IELTS important for students?
An IELTS score is an accepted English language rating at over 10,000 organizations worldwide. Additionally, it is a vital part of obtaining a visa. Lastly, it helps students entering most post-secondary institutions as a second language learner in Canada, the United Kingdom, the USA and Australia, as well as other countries.
Does this course focus on the Academic or General Training type test? Who should take this course?
This course focuses on the Academic test type, particularly on achievement within the highest band levels. Students can prepare for the course by taking either of the other two IELTS courses available at VanWest, or by taking EAP300 or General English Level 7-8. Most students entering this course have plans to go to a university or college in an English-speaking country.
What does it mean that the course will develop learner independence?
Students take the IELTS test in a strictly controlled environment, including bio-metric security. Students must be prepared to perform at their best skill level with no assistance. So, they must be well-practiced in all areas of the test. The course teaches the necessary skills, and simulates full tests every week. Additionally, students are encouraged to expand their vocabularies and practice their speaking skills outside of class to speed their learning.
