Language Exchange Activity

Language Exchange Activity

A language exchange activity is fun and informative. In addition, it is an excellent way to meet people who are not from your country or language background. So, how does it work?

First, people get paired up with a partner who speaks a different language. Then, they teach each other their own native languages. For example, a Saudi student will teach Arabic to a Mexican student. After that, the Mexican student will teach Spanish to the Saudi student.

In a language exchange activity, you are the expert – no matter your English level. Using English as a middle ground, students get a chance to teach and learn in a fun, dynamic way. Also, it’s an interactive way to learn about other cultures. Everyone can feel welcome and you can get a chance to make a friend from another country.

So, what did the students think about this activity?

“I came because I like these extra activities,” says Mathias, a Brazilian student. “It’s a way to learn more after school. I’m interested in learning about other languages too.”

Khalid, who is from Saudi Arabia, agrees with Mathias. He says, “I want to make new friends. When I walk outside, I can talk to a Brazilian or a person from another country using his or her language. After this, they accept me more easily and we talk more.”

“I had a chance to meet people that speak another language, not Japanese,” says Koichi, “It was a good chance for me. I met some people that I didn’t know studied here.”

Since a lot of the students liked the activity, many say that they would definitely attend again.

“Next time, I would like to try to say more things in different languages,” Says Elena, a Taiwanese student, “Maybe learn some vocabulary, for example. I want to know the most basic things.”

To all the students who joined last time – thank you! We look forward to seeing you next time!
