Job Fair in Kelowna

Why attend a Job Fair in Kelowna?

In a job fair, job seekers get to speak with a lot of different businesses and their respective hiring managers in one day. A job fair allows you to interact with a hiring manager and sell yourself. Face to face interaction is always the best kind of interaction with a hiring manager because they are more likely to remember you. This way you become a face – not just a name on a piece of paper. In short, there are 3 basic reasons to attend a job fair:

  1. Gain Experience
The more employers you meet and interact with, the sharper your interviewing skills will become. This is a powerful tool in boosting your confidence in communicating with employers, HR Managers, hiring companies, and recruiters on the floor.
  2. Get interviewed
Employers can choose to conduct on-the-spot interviews and may even make immediate hiring decisions on the spot.
  3. Get a job and start your dream career
The employers want to meet you. They want to hear from you. They want to see you in person. Employers want candidates who offer the best value to their organizations. So, the more people you meet, the higher chance you’ll have of getting the job you want.

VanWest at the Thompson Okanagan Regional Tourism Job Fair

Our students attended the Thompson Okanagan Regional Tourism Job Fair that was held in Kelowna on March 15th, 2018.  This job fair is the largest tourism and hospitality career fair in the Okanagan.  There were 30 different tourism and hospitality employers in attendance representing different wineries, hotels, resorts, tourist attractions and activities, and so on.

This job fair was a great opportunity for our students to practice what they had learned. Students trained their business communication skills and interpersonal skills. This provided them with more insight on how to interact with hiring managers. Also, they understood that it is vital that you are comfortable talking about yourself and your skills and qualifications to hiring managers when attending a job fair. You have to stand out and increase your chance for an interview. Our students that attended did great and were able to speak with a variety of hiring managers at local companies.

Student Feedback on the Fair

The most common feedback about the job fair from our students was that they were all nervous but that they enjoyed going to the event. Our students all agreed that it was great practice for them to be able to talk about themselves comfortably and confidently. One student had an on-the-spot interview and was offered a position with the company a few days later!
