Communicating With A Face Mask

To communicate with a face mask truly has its challenges. Even though the world seems like it has gotten accustomed to wearing one there is still a lot of miscommunication happening in our day-to-day lives. I’m sure you’ve dealt with one form of misunderstanding while wearing your face mask as well. Here at VanWest College, we have come up with a few tips that can probably help you communicate better!

Communicate With A Facemask

1. Make eye contact.

When speaking with someone make sure to make eye contact to indicate that you are communicating with that person. When you are locked in it should be easier to convey the message you are trying to deliver. As a bonus tip, maybe you might want to start emoting more using your eyes. Another bonus tip is to be more attentive to how others are emoting with their eyes.

2. Point.

I know I know, many of us were taught at a younger age that pointing was really rude but during these times it is almost essential. Many stores, restaurants, and organizations have equipped themselves with many signage to make navigating in their establishments so much easier. You should take advantage of this. Many restaurants have their menus displayed for your convenience so don’t worry about having to point at what it is you are trying to get. I’m sure the staff would appreciate it as well to lessen the chances of miscommunication so that your receive the best type of service.

3. Listen more.

A very big part of having to communicate with a face mask is active listening. To be a very good active listener is to understand the person you are conversing with might also be having a difficult time communicating with their mask on. Be patient as to how you want people to be patient with you.

4. Don’t be frazzled.

Last but not least, just don’t be frazzled. Let’s calm down and try not to let our anxieties get the best of us. Again, many of us are adjusting to these times at our own pace so it’s best to be more understanding of everybody else and get through this time together.
