VanWest Culture Day raises over $900 for Spread the Net!!

Since last year in October, VanWest has been raising money for Spread the Net through various in-school events. Our initial goal was to reach $1000. On Friday, July 20^th, VanWest College held our signature event, Culture Day. This event helps bring people from all over the world together. Thus, in the spirit of this message of friendship and empathy, we continued to raise money for this charity.

So, what is Spread the Net?

Spread the Net Student Challenge: 1 Net. 10 Bucks. Save Lives.

Spread the Net is a charitable organization co-founded by two Canadians. Since the year 2007, this organization has helped save more than 41 million people from a terrible disease: Malaria.

Doctors can cure and prevent Malaria. However, more than 3.2 billion people are at risk of getting it because treatment is not easy to get in poorer countries. Every year, malaria kills about 438,000 people. It is the leading cause of death of children under 5 in Africa.

This disease is very easily spread by mosquitos. So, the most cost-effective way to prevent Malaria is by using bed nets to protect people, especially children. Since 2007, Spread the Net has delivered more than 19 million nets to families in Africa and saved many, many lives. Students help by fundraising and donating money. Every $10 raised can buy 1 net, which can save an entire family from Malaria.

VanWest Students Take the Challenge

During last Friday’s Culture Day event, we raised money in two ways. First, we raffled off a spot on our upcoming VanWest Rocky Mountains tour. In addition, we challenged our 7 Culture Day teams to prepare and sell delicious food from each of their cultural backgrounds. We had team Brazil, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Latin America, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand.

We are very proud to say that the winner for the team challenge is: the Latin American team! Way to go guys!

Amazing Results!

Since October of last year, we wanted to raise $1000. We just needed a little more to reach our goal.

On Friday, July 20^th, we brought our total donations up to an amazing $1,830.40

Above all, we want to thank everyone who helped. This shows how strong we as a school can be here at VanWest. To all student leaders who took charge, thank you. To all teachers, staff, and student volunteers who supported us, thank you. To all people who attended the event and donated, thank you.
