Top 5 Restaurants in Vancouver by Jed

Hey guys it’s Jed, sharing my top 5 restaurants you check out while you’re studying in Vancouver. It’s the summertime which means it is the perfect time to grab your best buds and try new things. Firstly, I will admit there are probably WAY better places to go to in the city. My challenge is for you to escape your comfort zone and explore the east side of the Lower Mainland.

Longtail Kitchen

To kick off this top 5 list is Longtail Kitchen in New Westminster. Longtail is this little restaurant in the River Market food court. It is just a few steps from the New Westminster Skytrain station. They serve primarily Thai cuisine but they also have other amazing southeast Asian dishes. They have other sister restaurants across the lower mainland but I think this one is the best. Check out their menu here.

Must Try:

Chicken Wings, Pad Thai Prawns, Gailan and Pork Belly

Midam Korean Bistro

Next on this list is this popular Midam Korean Bistro. Nestled in Korea Town Center in Burnaby, this restaurant is only open at night. Despite the limited hours, this place gets really busy! I reassure you they are worth the wait. It is also just a few steps from the Lougheed Skytrain station. From the food to the decor, the overall ambiance is amazing. The music is loud and the servings are huge. You’ll probably need at least 2-3 other friends to enjoy this restaurant. Check out their menu here.

Must Try:

Pan-Fried Sizzling Porkbelly, Midam Deep-Fried Sampler, Spicy Kimchi and Pork Tofu Soup

Midam Korean Bistro

The Parkside Brewery

Okay, The Parkside Brewery in Port Moody isn’t really a restaurant. But the summer experience here allows it to be in my top 5 list. Just like what the name states, it is a brewery. You have to be at least 19 years old to enter and order here. Port Moody’s Murray Street is one of Vancouver’s interesting brewery locations. Among all these establishments I think Parkside is one of the better breweries. Why I put it on this list because, especially in the summer, they have a lot of food trucks nearby. You and your mates can grab different kinds of food to pair with their amazing beers. Parkside is also just a short walk from Moody Centre station.

Must Try:

Dawn Pilsner, Dusk Pale Ale

No.9 Restaurant

Growing up in Vancouver you know the No.9 Restaurant in Richmond is an institution. This cash-only spot specializes in Chinese BBQ and Cantonese cuisines. Just steps from the Lansdowne Skytrain station it is the perfect place for late-night eats. Why you decided to get Chinese food at 2:30 in the morning is totally up to you. All I can do is recommend this restaurant. Check out their menu here.

Must Try:

Roast & BBQ Pork, Yeung Chow Fried Rice, Pepper Salted Deep Fried Fish Fillet

Maruhachi Ra-men / Ramen Danbo

Ok, the last recommendation is two ramen restaurants (so I guess this should be a top 6 list?). I put these two together because they are both ramen spots but they specialize in two different kinds. If you are craving chicken broth (which I think is better by the way!) I suggest Maruhachi. They have a few locations all over the Lower Mainland but I think their central library branch in downtown Vancouver is the best. You can check out their menu here.

If you like the traditional pork broth ramen then I suggest Ramen Danbo. The location I would suggest is the Robson one near our campus. It is really good here but don’t take only my word for it. Just look at the long line waiting outside! Many of our Japanese students claim this is the best ramen in Vancouver. Check out their menu here.

Now that’s my top 5 restaurants in Vancouver I think you should try. Just look out in the future because I’m sure to recommend some more! Again, all these restaurants are near Skytrain stations so they are easy to get to! Go grab your friends, try these places out, and let me know what you think! Happy eats (or drinks)!
