As international students studying here in Vancouver, British Columbia at Van West College, we
wanted to share our guide to surviving as an international student in this beautiful city.
Written by Mariam Andrea Centeno Badilla and Marcio Reyes de Oliveira
Firstly, getting involved in campus life is a great way to meet people with similar interests and
make new friends. Van West College offers a variety of meetings and trips to astonishing places
in BC and of course, no less important, the great environment on the campus gives the students
a nice place to go every day.
Exploring the city is another great way to experience all that Vancouver has to offer. Whether
you are hiking in the mountains, exploring Stanley Park, or taking a stroll along the seawall,
there’s always something for everyone.
Embracing Canadian culture is also important as it allows you to feel more at home. Canada is
known for being a welcoming and friendly country, so don’t be afraid to try new things such as
poutine, attend a hockey game or celebrate Canada Day.
Additionally, taking advantage of student services such as academic advising and career
services are essential for your academic and professional success as an international student.
Lastly, connecting with other international students can be a great way to share experiences and
build a supportive community as advice, if you are taking or will take any of the Coop Programs
at Van West, do not forget to build a strong resume and Linkedin profile, there are plenty of
good opportunities you in the city.
Being an international student can be challenging, but it can also be an incredibly rewarding
experience. By getting involved in campus life, exploring the city, embracing Canadian culture,
taking advantage of student services, and connecting with other international students, you’ll be
well on your way to thriving in Vancouver.
We wish you the best of luck and success!
