7 Tips for New ESL Students
It’s your first day at VanWest College, a new school…in a new country. The language is different, the culture is new, and you might not know anyone yet. It can be really stressful but, don’t panic! Here are some tips to help you on your first day and to make the most of your stay in Vancouver:
- Smile and be friendly
You might feel nervous or a little shy on your first day, but it’s OK! Smile and introduce yourself. Remember that other people might be nervous too. Also, challenge yourself to remember people’s names – especially your classmates. You will see them every day and study together, so using other people’s names creates a friendly, comfortable atmosphere. - Ask questions
It’s OK if you don’t understand something – you have a lot of new information to deal with. Make sure you ask about the things you don’t understand. That way you will always be prepared. The teachers and counselors are very friendly and happy to answer any questions. Remember – you are not alone! - Meet as many people as possible
…from different countries! It’s easy to want to speak to another person who can understand you in your first language, but this is a unique chance to make friends of many cultures. If your friend is someone from a different culture, you will always have a chance to practice your English and you will have a lot of fun while doing it. For example, if two Korean students want to go out to dinner, they can invite a Brazilian classmate. You’ll enjoy a tasty dinner and fun English conversation! - Join the activities after school
VanWest College works hard to offer a diverse after school activity calendar, with many types of activities for every interest. If you want extra speaking practice – go to the Conversation Club! Don’t know Vancouver? Join a sightseeing tour! Want to try something new like bowling or laser tag? Go with us! Want to meet new people? Walk right up to the front desk activities board and sign up to any activity – if you bring your smile and open attitude, you’ll find a new friend for sure! - Volunteer
You might not be ready to do this on your first day, but the sooner you start the better! Vancouver has many volunteer opportunities that require hundreds of people. When you volunteer, your English will improve, you will experience something new, you will have something to add to your resume, and enjoy many other benefits. Why not try? - Join a gym or sports group
Keep active. It will improve your health and your mood, making it easier to study. Ask your teachers or classmates about the various options available near you. - Become a member of the Vancouver Public Library
This library has MANY resources. In addition to books, DVDs, and CDs, you can borrow an instrument, use their digital lab, take part in conversation clubs, and do many others things for free. Just bring a document with your address and get a library card – it’s definitely worth it!
There are many ways to make your stay better. Always be open to new ideas and new opportunities. Welcome to Vancouver!
