VanWest Culture Day

Every year, we set apart a special date to celebrate VanWest Culture Day. It is a fun, whole-school activity that always engages our students and staff. It helps bring people together and creates friendships that span across oceans.

Are you curious about other cultures?

Have you ever felt like people don’t understand what your country is really like?

If so, take part in this fantastic event!

Weeks of preparations lead up to the celebration. First, the students divide into groups based on their background. Then, they get a classroom which they are free to decorate however they want. At this point, they can choose how to showcase the best of their cultures. It is a chance to teach others about whom they are and where they come from.

For example, do you know the difference between a person’s Korean age and their international age?

Do Brazilians speak ‘Brazilian’? Or perhaps they speak Spanish?

Where is Colombia or Panama?

What does Arabic food taste like?

How do you write your name in Japanese or Chinese?

These and many other questions are answered in this student-run interactive event.

VanWest Culture Day : A truly interactive event

Student leaders get a chance to shine as they organize their peers and take charge of their section’s activities. Teachers come together to prepare a Canada section and add their own flavor to the festivities. There’s an air of expectation and celebration.

This year’s Culture Day was a success. Students shared the food, music, games, and much more with their classmates. We also got to see the talent of many of our student and teacher musicians, who played beautifully at our stage area. In addition, we danced, we had a chance to try henna, and we saw the beautiful costumes of many areas around the world.

Thank you to all the people who made this year’s VanWest Culture Day such a success! We hope to keep learning and laughing together in the future.
